4.3. The far right

As we have seen, with the emergence of democracy, conservative thought was directed particularly through the UCD and AP parties. Nevertheless, groups linked to the far right also formed their own channels for action, which have until now had poor results: an outcome that is probably the result of the tremendous capacity of AP/ PP for making contradictory statements without ever denying the principles of the Franco regime. As in other areas, ministers of the dictatorship also took part in forming this more ‘extremist’ area. We have previously seen the cases of Julio Martínez of FN, and Tomás Allende y García-Baxter, founder of the FNFF. However, there were also others, such as Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora y Mon, Enrique García-Ramal y Cellalbo, José Utrera Molina and Joaquín Gutiérrez Cano.

For example, in 1978, Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora y Mon ( 1924 -2002 ), founded the Spanish Democratic Right-Wing party, which eventually entered into an alliance with FN. Fernández de la Mora took on this challenge, having chaired the Spanish National Union party years before, which went on to form part of AP, for which he was to be MP for Pontevedra and minister in the Xunta of Galicia prior to the creation of the State of the Autonomies. This diplomat left AP, owing to the support of its founder and ex-Francoist minister, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, for the constitutional process. He retreated to the far right wing of Spanish unionist thought and created the journal La Revista Española. He ran this journal, published up to 2013, until his death in 2002. The management of the journal continued under the auspices of his son, Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora, who, in a tribute to his father, stated at an Ateneo Jovellanos venue that the 15 May movement and its political legacy could mean the return to the violence of the early 20 th century. During the dictatorship, Fernández de la Mora y Mon worked as a diplomat in Germany and Greece, and was also to be Minister for Foreign Affairs and Public Works.

The Fundación Nacional Francisco Franco has worked a great deal developing this extreme right wing ideology. The foundation, which has been receiving state subsidies for years, was created basically by members of Franco’s family and ex-ministers of the regime. One of them, Enrique García Ramal y Cellalbo ( 1914 -1987 ), had been an activist of the far-right party Falange since his youth. He also founded the Francoist Trade Union in Barcelona, where he was also a councillor in the 1940 s. García-Ramal was attorney of the Franco courts for almost thirty years, and finally became Minister for Trade Union Relations in 1969. Catalan by birth, he was president of the National Economy Council up to three years after Adolfo Suárez came to power. Shortly afterwards, he was prosecuted for misappropriation as director of Winiunter, as was his son for the same offence at Banco de Descuentos. His daughter, María Carmen García-Ramal López
